Subsession (a) Title: Creative Commons" for the Academic World
Session Description:
Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org/) is a
non-profit organization that offers a flexible range of protections and
freedoms for authors and artists and delivers the creations of the
artists to the masses. They have built upon the "all rights reserved" of
traditional copyright to create a voluntary "some rights reserved"
copyright. Areas of the site include Audio, Images, Video, Text and
Education specific content such as lesson plans, course packets, etc.
The Session will briefly cover the basic license agreement of Creative
Commons in terms of Academic use as well it will also provide an
overview of the Creative Commons site and how it can be a useful benefit
for Academic use.
Presenter: Damon Roth, Assiniboine Community College
Damon
Roth is an instructor in the Web Design and Computer System
Technology Programs at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon
Manitoba. He has been with the college since 1997. His focus is on new
media, including digital imaging, advanced web design, and instructional
media technologies. He also instructs various workshops in the evening
for Assiniboine College as well as Distance education courses. Damon has
background in Media Production from Assiniboine College, has a
Certificate of Adult Education from Red River College and a Bachelor of
General Studies from Brandon University.
Subsession (b)Title:
MANDOLIN: More than a musical instrument
Session Description:
Representatives of Manitoba’s higher education institutions have formed
a loose consortium working towards a provincial Learning Object
Repository. Since education is funded at a provincial level, the
consortium believes that provincial partnerships are easier to broker
and more likely to be sustainable. The Manitoba Digital Objects for
Learning on the Internet (MANDOLIN) project began several years ago and
has continued as an on-going discussion of what is needed and wanted at
the provincial level. This presentation will discuss the desired
outcomes of the project, the process to date and current activities of
the MANDOLIN group.
Presenter: Jan Miller, University of Manitoba
Jan
Miller has worked for Distance Education, University of Manitoba for
7 years. She has been primarily responsible for courses offered in the
Net-based delivery format and for online components of courses offered
in by other delivery formats. Prior to her position in Distance
Education, Jan worked for NOVL Labs, in Winnipeg, and for Internal
Medicine at the University Manitoba. Jan has a B. Sc. in Electrical
Engineering and a M. Sc. in Biomedical Engineering. She is currently
working on a Master of City Planning degree and is considering how to
relate planning issues to Distance Education for a thesis topic.
