Workshop 5
Every Classroom a Library – Information Literacy
Skills Every Teacher Needs
Workshop Description:
Information Literacy is a “key” skill for the 21st century. In a
technology-rich information access environment, teachers must have
in-depth knowledge and skill on how academic content, technology and
information literacy skills intersect. The focus of this workshop is on
strategies for using Internet technologies to engage students in
effective use of information and communication technology. Practical
instructional design that can be assimilated into classrooms will be
demonstrated. This workshop replicates a research process with an
information literacy focus. Workshop participants will use technology to
have “hands-on” practice sharpening their own information literacy
skills. This workshop will describe and illustrate effective strategies
for creating and using critical questions; discussing techniques for
evaluating web content; presenting processes for organizing original
thinking and synthesizing information.
Presenter: Hazel Clark, 2005 Teacher Librarian of the Year
Hazel
Clark is currently completing her Master’s degree in Education and
Technology at Simon Fraser University. Her Bachelor’s degree is in
teacher-librarianship from the University of British Columbia and she
has 16 years experience as a secondary school teacher librarian, ICT,
and English teacher. In 2005, Hazel was the Teacher Librarian of the
Year, awarded by the Canadian Association for School Libraries for her
work in implementing school library programs based on a collaborative
model, which integrates the library with classroom programs and
technology resources. She conducts workshops locally and provincially in
promoting effective use of technology to develop and implement
innovative thinking and creative problem solving. Her research interests
include communities of practice, information literacy in hypertext
environments, and digital expression. Hazel’s current research is in the
area of communities of practice and how teacher librarians engaged in
this community effect the educational program of the school.
