Session 12
Trials,
Tribulations and Successes in Developing a Distance-Delivered
GIS Diploma
Session Description:
Software is one of the main
components of any Geographical Information System (GIS).
Unfortunately, GIS software is usually quite large in disk size
and expensive to purchase. This has been a challenge to
developing and distributing learning opportunities in the GIS
field. The new advanced diploma in GIS Environmental
Technologies at Assiniboine Community College is developing new
and exciting strategies to help address this problem. These
strategies include establishing an application server and use of
specialized software to create recorded-software lab demos.
Implementating an application server gives students the power to
utilize the required GIS software and data without the high
expense of purchasing the software. We will discuss the trials,
tribulations and successes which have had in our first year of
program deployment.
Presenter: Greg Lewis
Greg Lewis is an instructor in
the GIS Environmental Technologies and Land & Water Management
diploma programs at Assiniboine Community College (ACC) in
Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Since starting with the college in
2001, he has been very active in promoting Geomatics in Manitoba
and has run numerous training sessions for teachers and
professionals. Currently, Greg is working on developing a
distance-delivered advanced diploma in GIS Environmental
Technologies and researching the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
for spatially-enabled aerial photography.
