Session 3
Catching the
Wave: Information Technologies, Accessibility and Inclusion
Session Description:
Information technology has been
heralded as providing liberation for people with disabilities.
And in some cases it has – access to newspapers, health
information and other material is much easier on the Internet
for blind users, webcams can provide long-distance face-to-face
contact for people with intellectual disabilities, Deaf Internet
users don’t need to use hearing people to access information
when they go on line. But much information technology continues
to exclude people with disabilities, with limited access to the
technology itself, as well as through lack of inclusion of the
unique interests and needs of particular groups of people with
disabilities. In this seminar, Gary Annable and Deborah
Stienstra of the Disability and Information Technologies (Dis-IT)
Research Alliance will release research findings and share their
insights and reflections on the successes and challenges of
catching the wave of research collaboration.
