Session 19 - FULL

Title: Information Technology and Adult Students in University Continuing Education

Session Description:

The Continuing Education program administrators are planning to offer more blended delivery options. In the University of Manitoba continuing education context, blended learning is intended to increase scheduling flexibility for both students and instructors by using some online course components to reduce the number of scheduled evening or weekend class times.

This session will present the initial findings from the first year of a three-year longitudinal survey study of continuing education students’ experiences and opinions of information technology. Some comparisons to the Educause Applied Research Centre (ECAR) findings will be presented, as ECAR granted permission to use questions from their survey of U.S. undergraduate students. The findings from the continuing education information technology survey form part of the adult learners’ needs assessment.

As with the ECAR study, this survey asks for basic background information and questions students or potential students about:

  • what kinds of information technologies they use and how often;
  • what their level of skill is at using different information technologies;
  • how these technologies contribute to their learning experience; and
  • what value information technologies provide in teaching and learning.
