Session 25
Title: Digital Students –
Archaic Assessment (Panel)
Session
Description:
A generation
ago, knowledge was locked in textbooks, libraries, and in
teachers’ minds. Today’s
students have the knowledge of the world at their fingertips.
Information is accessible to them anywhere, and at any time.
Many students have a laptop or other wireless device that
connects them to the vast collective knowledge of the Internet.
How does this impact on how we teach
and, therefore, assess
curricular outcomes? Can we continue to effectively teach with a
teacher-centered, traditional approach in the classroom? Do we
need to make fundamental changes on how we teach and assess
students in this digital age? Participants are welcome to share
their ideas and opinions.
Panel Members:
Marg Janssen, Assistant
Superintendent, Rolling River School Division
Ron Nordstrom, Beautiful Plains School Division
Moderator:
Kim Melvin, Louis Riel
School Division
Presenters: Ron Nordstrom, Marg Janssen
Ron Nordstrom has worked as the Technology Coordinator
for Beautiful Plains School Division for the past nine years.
Like many divisions across Manitoba, Beautiful Plains has been
re-examining assessment and reporting practices. Ron has been a
member of that divisional team and believes that in order to
inspire lifelong learning, one needs to commit to becoming a
lifelong learner.
